Cartoonist's Profiles
Derrick was born in 1962. From an early age, he displayed humour and the ability to draw and enjoyed illustrating, much to the dismay of those who, became the butt end of his humour.
Derrick studied graphic design (did not finish) and has become well known for his chalkboard illustrations in pubs and restaurants around the country and abroad as well as his cartoon illustrations and portraits. He has a unique ability to communicate and understand his client’s needs and to illustrate and conceptualize what his clients require. This said, Derrick often contributes to his clients cause.
He enjoys complex cartoon commissions and has developed a reputation for designing and illustrating cartoon maps. The most recent being the Cape Peninsular and Port Elizabeth harbour as well as the Wits University Campus. Major publications have used Derrick’s political cartoons and he has a large and diverse clientele.
His conceptualization abilities make him a great asset to a wide range of creative projects.
Derrick has works permanently on display at the Port Elizabeth Museum. He is part of the team that developed the Gimme 5 Life Orientation Game for children and adults as part of moral regeneration. The Game has been accepted as a training programme for the department of Education and covers Grades R – 12. The University of Natal has commissioned a pilot study to be used for First year students as part of the foundation studies course. In 2010 Derrick launched Beertubes SA & UK and is the sole supplier of this product to Africa and the United Kingdom. In 2011 Derrick became the sole supplier of Kuretake Art and Graphic markers & materials and supplies the major Art Retailers with a wide variety of products relating to cartooning and craft.
Derrick works full time from his studio in Port Elizabeth and accepts commissions from all over the world.
